Apple Supplier, Wintek, Faces Resistence to Unfair Labor Practices in Taiwan, China

Asian manufacturer Wintek, which produces flatscreen monitors for Apple, Nokia, and HTC, has laid off hundreds of workers in Taiwan last November because they were pregnant or due to their age, a practice which violates Apple's code of conduct, according to the Hong Kong based group Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior.  This April, 7000 working at Wintek's Dongguan facility went on strike to protest the factory's poor food and violations of wage and overtime pay laws.  As of April 25, many organizations in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China have joined in solidarity with the Wintek workers, including Taiwan's National Federation of Independent  Trade Unions, the Wintek Bargaining Team, Solidarity Union, Youth Labor Union 95, Taiwan Labor Information and Education Association, Pioneer, Globalization Monitor, and SACOM, calling for Wintek to rehire discriminatorily fired workers and uphold fair labor practices.

The international campaign is appealing that:

1. Apple, Nokia and HTC to take up their corporate responsibilities to stop worker abuse at WINTEK now;

2. WINTEK Taiwanese management to withdraw the lawsuit of defamation immediately;

3. WINTEK management to respect workers’ legal rights to wages and benefits;

4. Local governments to investigate rights violations at WINTEK; and

5. Credible labor organizations and unions to monitor working conditions in WINTEK’s facilities.
